Good morning on this wonderful Friday!
Congratulations to all the students in the Music Department for their fine showing in the Annapolis Valley Music Festival! I was so proud of all three groups and couldn't have been happier with the results from the festival.
Sr. Concert Band - silver rating
Jr. Concert Band - bronze rating
Sr. Jazz Band - gold rating
The Sr. Jazz Band will be performing in Sunday's Stars of the Festival Concert @ 2:00 pm. There is an admission fee of $5.00 or $12.00 per family, so please consider coming out and enjoying an afternoon of music. If your son or daughter is also performing in the evening concert, your admission will be honored at that event.
Next Friday, April 28th, we are hosting the band from British Columbia! I'm so excited to have these students join us in a concert and share the bond that musicians have from across the continent! We are asking our students to bring in a dish for a pot luck supper, along with a drink. There is a sign up sheet in the Music Room, so we know what we have coming in to feed everyone. The pot luck starts at 6:00 pm and we will follow the dinner with music from all three of our ensembles and the two ensembles from the visiting band. We may even try for a joint piece or two!!
There is NO admission for this, but please come out and show off our Nova Scotia hospitality!
Finally, THIS MONDAY, we have our regular Music Parents' meeting @ 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend and offer your opinions, thoughts and ideas.
Good morning everyone,
I received via email the dates and times for the Annapolis Valley Music Festival. It took me by surprise as the performances for the bands are the first week instead of the second week!! Please note the following performance dates and times and please contact me if you have any questions or concerns:
Tuesday, April 18th - Sr. Concert Band @ 4:00 pm
Wednesday, April 19th - Jr. Concert Band @ 9:45 am
Thursday, April 20th - Sr. Jazz Band @ 10:00 am
I will be sending home travel permission sheets to be signed and brought back within the next week. I'm hopeful for a positive showing of our talents and abilities, so please consider checking with your student(s) to see if they are practicing and preparing for the upcoming performances.
We are also hosting and billeting the Sr. Concert Band from Campbell River, BC at the end of the month. Come to tonight's Music Parents' meeting to find out more about this incredible opportunity and a chance to show how much you are supportive of our own music program! The meeting starts @ 6:30 pm and usually lasts about one hour.
Have a great month of April,
Good afternoon everyone,
I want to thank you for your patience for the past 3 months. I'm not sure that anyone expected all that happened, but your support of the Music Department has never wavered, and for that I'm thankful! We had a wonderful showing at our meeting on Monday evening and with the advice of all, here's what we have planned going forward to the end of the year:
April 24-28 Annapolis Valley Music Festival -- all ensembles are registered
April 26 - In house adjudication at NKEC -- all ensembles will play and have a clinic
April 28 - Pot luck & joint concert with BC band -- all ensembles will play festival music
May 29th - Spring Concert -- all ensembles will play
We're also looking at touring the feeder schools with any combination of Jr. Concert, Sr. Concert or Sr. Jazz bands!!
I'll include more details as we get closer to each date. Again, thank you for your continued support of the Northeast Kings Music program and the students!!
Good morning everyone,
Well, we are into December and I couldn't be happier with our students! The two Remembrance Assemblies were so moving and your sons and daughters did so much that day to make my frantic world so much better! They came into the gym, set up their gear and got ready to play - without any direction from me! This speaks volumes about these wonderful kids!! Special kudos go to Nathan McNally and Seth MacLean for their renditions of Last Post and Reivellie. Also, thanks to Gabe Skaling for his narration during Each Time You Tell Their Story.
Last night was our annual Evening With the Arts here at the school, with all the music groups, dance club, Improv clubs, Middle School Drama and actors from the musical sharing their talents with approximately 200 people in the audience. Again, the music groups shone a bright light on their talents and I was so proud to stand in front of them! They really are the bright light in my day...every day!!
As for the upcoming Work to Rule job action that will be occurring on Monday...AT THIS TIME, there will be NO after school or before school rehearsals. This only affects the Sr. Concert Band and Sr. Jazz Band. The Jr. Concert Band will still rehearse as their practices occur as part of their curriculum. I'm hopeful for a quick resolution to all of this and invite you to continue to remain involved in the Music Parents' Association. The members of the Executive will handle any fundraising activities - to include deliveries of the pies and recycling bags (just ordered) and any gift wrapping that may occur. If you have ANY questions from Monday morning forward - you must go through the executive of the MPA.
Please know that this is extremely hard for me to do, but only when the government sees the impact will changes happen. Again, I'm hopeful that sane minds will prevail and we will come back to a negotiation stance.
Until then - breathe deep and seek peace,
It's the end of the second month of the school year and we're clipping along in the Music Department. Have you all signed up for Remind yet? The inclement weather is coming closer to us and nobody wants to be out on the road if they don't need to be - right?
The first large commitment we have will be Remembrance Day assemblies on November 10th. The assembly for the high school will take place at 1:00 pm with the middle school assembly to follow at 2:15 pm. I'm asking the high school concert band to please dress in all black for those assemblies. Grade 9 students who may NOT have a black shirt should be looking at getting one fairly soon.
If you missed the Open House Music Parents Meeting last night, I've uploaded last month's minutes for your viewing pleasure. Please take a minute to read through them and feel free to ask any questions you may have of us! A big thank you to the parents who came last night and offered input into our association! It was much appreciated.
Enjoy the change in weather and we will chat next month!
Welcome back to another (I hope) successful year at Northeast Kings Education Center. For all of our new students - WELCOME!! I'm excited to start my fifth year at NKEC and we have some positive changes that are occurring within the Music Department.
We have many students who are involved in all aspects of student life at NKEC and that continues to be encouraged by me. I'm always willing to work with our many coaches and employers to allow our students a fair opportunity to participate in anything and everything they wish to throughout the school year. My request of the students is to COMMUNICATE with me (well in advance) of other obligations you may have for different activities. Use the calendar on this website to determine when and where practices will be and don't forget to inform your employers or coaches of our concert commitments.
Along the lines of playing at one football game and one basketball tournament last year, I would like to expand those opportunities by starting a NKEC Pep Band. This would be an all-volunteer group that would play at selected games and matches throughout the school year - for as many sports as we can realistically support. We would play several "pop" tunes, some "rah-rah" tunes, and O Canada. Depending on weather, coaches' desires and student interest, we would stay for at least half of the games...trying to up the spirit of the NKEC fans. We will have a meeting for any student who might be interested in this band.
This is also a musical year, so there will be an opportunity to participate in the Pit Band/Orchestra again this year. With the success of The Wizard of Oz two years ago, I am hopeful that we will have many students willing to put in time, practice, and effort to help make this year's musical as successful.
Again, I will be using the REMIND app to help our students (and parents who sign up) of upcoming obligations and commitments. Please call the following number and get set up for texts about meetings, concerts, fundraiser deadlines, etc. This has proven extremely successful in the past couple of years, and I anticipate that you will find it helpful as well.

Finally, I have made it one of my school goals and personal goals to set aside one period each cycle to work on this website and communication, so I'm looking to all of you to help keep my feet to the fire and keep this site updated. We are all better served when communication is first and foremost for the benefit of the students. Please let me know if you ever have questions, comments, suggestions or concerns. I'm here for you, your students, and the music!!
Let's have a fantastic year!!
